We Own and Shape : Our Voices – Our Bodies – Our Lives – by centering ourselves.
RISE eX-detainees is a self-determined advocacy and welfare organisation entirely led and governed by eX-detainee refugees in Australia. Our projects and campaigns are properly measured and verified directly by eX-detainee refugees to elevate the lives of refugees in the community. From Campaigns to Foodbank Service, Casework to Training Programs, Driving Projects to our Drop-in Centre, we have been running them with your support — and we continue to do so. Furthermore, RISE eX-detainees have advocated for groundbreaking national and international changes to the narratives that dehumanise refugees seeking asylum, pushed for refugee self-determination, and led campaigns and projects.
We want to remind you that, in so-called Australia, the eX-detainee community is arguably one of the poorest, most racially-profiled, and systematically discriminated-against community groups. Detainees and eX-detainees are disposable. Our community has been subjected to the misery of over 30 years of torture and abuse to serve the interests of politicians and profiteers in the refugee detention industry. We don’t take any federal, state, or local government funding, and mainly rely on donations from the community to run our programs. We don’t use refugee kids’ images or take “selfies with UN officials” to make you donate. We say no to poverty porn and to exploiting images of our community members.
Most of the eX-detainee refugees we support arrived in Australia by boat 1, 2, or 3 decades ago. Some of these eX-detainees were detained and tortured under successive Australian government policies, then released into the community — now living below the poverty line in Australia. To continue all our projects, campaigns, and training programs, we need your ongoing support to sustain them.
RISE eX-detainees welcome your donations, and any donation over $2 is tax deductible.
