Karinya Young Women's Service, with 45 years of experience, is dedicated to supporting young people facing homelessness in Tasmania. As an independent, non-profit organisation, the organisation is governed by a board with operational responsibility delegated to the chief executive officer.
Karinya has three program areas supporting young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The Karinya Young Mums (KYM) and The Karinya Youth Transitional Tenancy (KYTT) Program have independent units in the Launceston areas provided by HomesTas. Karinya manages the tenancy with a dedicated tenancy officer.
Karinya Crisis Accommodation is the only provider of crisis accommodation for young women aged 13-20 in northern Tasmania, collaborating with various Tasmanian service providers and offering 24/7 support for up to six young women at once, including an emergency overnight couch. Additionally, a two-bedroom unit is available for longer crisis stays or for those transitioning towards independence.
Karinya Young Mums (KYM) focuses on safe and stable housing for expectant mothers and young families, offering up to two years of accommodation with comprehensive support to enhance children's long-term outcomes. The KYM Group aids personal growth and life skills through weekly meetings and activities, collaborating with various community groups.
The Karinya Youth Transitional Tenancy (KYTT) Program caters to 16-24-year-olds, promoting secure housing and reconnection with education, employment, and community through intensive case management.
Staff work closely with clients to address their needs and support access to stable accommodation. Partnerships with government and non-government services support them to ensure a coordinated and holistic approach.
