Back in 2019 when we farewelled our Year 12 students at the end of September, the Graduating Class missed a very special and much-loved Vinnies girl – Elisabeth Carey.
That would have been her final year of secondary school. But sadly, Elisabeth lost her battle with leukaemia when she was in Year 8 at just 13 years of age. We can only imagine how our gifted and gracious student would have grown up.
At the time of her passing, the College community found solace in the Chapel which was filled with thousands of beautiful and individual cranes made by her class mates.
Each crisp, colourful piece of paper was transformed into something unique. It was a tangible way we could express our grief and give tribute to Elisabeth’s short but treasured life.
Elisabeth was an outstanding student – but not just academically. She demonstrated genuine care and interest for everyone and everything around her. She lived our values and was posthumously honoured with the Scientia cum Religione award at speech night in December 2015.
The origami cranes we made were a symbol of hopefulness and they helped us through our grief back in 2015. But now, we have a new and more powerful symbol to remember Elisabeth’s generous nature and love for life.
I’m proud to confirm that we have established the Elisabeth Carey Scholarship. This Scholarship will help other girls to realise their dreams and embark on their own journey at St Vincent’s College.
This is a fitting and enduring commitment to Elisabeth Carey and her family. And today, I’d like to ask for your support for the scholarship recipients of the future. Young girls who might not otherwise be able to experience the wonderful education and opportunities on offer at our College.
Elisabeth brought much joy to our school community. Her memory will live on through this scholarship. Thank you for your support.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs Anne Fry
College Principal
