HOPE for Healthy Communities is a Mental Health Forum with the theme of Moving to Wellness. Talks will cover common mental health topics delivered by experts in the field. The event aims to educate the community in addition to those working in the health profession on challenging mental health conditions and neurodiversity. All funds raised from the event will support vulnerable communities in Papua New Guinea and Fiji through the charity HOPE worldwide Australia.
Talks will be held in the main auditorium (Monash Univeristy, Caufield K309) which has a seating capacity of 450. The foyer will have a mental health resource tables set up with opportunity to learn about services and to talk to health experts. The event can also be viewed online via livestream.
Light lunch provided (sponsored by 13SICK). Opportunity to network and access mental health resources (sponsored by MIPS). A Maths therapy table is also set up (by Alex Box)

SPEAKERS BIO'S
Dr Mark Timlin works as a General Practitioner and Country Manager of the charity, HOPE worldwide Australia. Mark graduated from Southampton University in the England and started working as an Emergency Doctor in London in 1996 and went on to do humanitarian work in Afghanistan and Pakistan for the charity HOPE worldwide for which he was awarded an MBE by the late Queen Elizabeth II for services to health care and education. He moved to Australia with his family in 2005 and worked in the emergency department and then in the prison system. For the last few years Mark has been working as a GP doing out of hours home visits, running a clinic for refugees, a youth mental health clinic and a clinic for people coming out of the prison system. He has a particular interest in treating people with poor mental health and utilises different approaches including Schema Therapy and EMDR. His presentation will focus on healing trauma through these interventions.
Dr Libby Rowe graduated from Monash University and started working as a GP in 1990. Her work with adolescents and the increasing prevalence of eating disorders sparked an interest in this area. She has presented many times on the topic of body image, healthy eating and eating disorders to community groups and health professionals. She has two publications on this topic (2017) and over the past 3 years she has lectured medical students at Monash university and continues to mentor students and doctors. In 2024 she became a member of the National Eating Disorders Collaboration (NEDC) committee on Tertiary Education of Eating Disorders with a goal of improving competence in identifying and managing people with eating disorders. Libby is passionate about early detection and ultimately about prevention. Her presentation will focus on identifying eating disorders and look at holistic treatment approaches.
Andrew Scott works as a clinical psychologist in Sydney and his practice is deeply rooted in both evidence-base medicine and active Christian faith. He currently leads a team of psychologists at a school where he can employ his passion for attachment-based therapy, clinical supervision, and neurobiology to support young people, empower families, and transform communities through holistic mental health support.
His presentation will focus on how spiritual belief connects with mental health and promotes wellness.
Dr Lauren Brown is an Educational Developmental Psychologist. She has a keen interest in assessments and works at a clinic in Melbourne conducting diagnostic assessments for neurodivergent conditions such as Autism and ADHD. She works with both children and adults. She has a particular interest in therapeutic interventions for children: play therapy and attachment-based parenting work.
Her presentation will be in two sessions, the first will cover the topic of the ADHD and Autism diagnosis; the second session will look at how parents can support the anxious child.
Dr Andrew Mau works as a GP therapist at Headspace Dandenong and Malvern Private Hospital in Melbourne. He is also the clinical lead for Headspace in Dandenong and Narre warren and mentors GPs working in mental health. For many years he was running his own private practice along with his wife who is also a GP and for the last 15 years he has focussed on treating people with substance abuse and poor mental health. He has a passion for helping people recover from addictions and developing the art of healing through connection and shared experience.
His presentation will focus on the therapeutic approach to addiction and trauma using psycho-dynamic approaches which include structural dissociation and models of the mind.
